EvOstea
An evolutionary perspective on osteopathic practice
Clinical practice enables us to understand the patient, reconstruct their history and interpret their allostatic load.
However, one question often remains unanswered: why does that vulnerability exist?
EvOstea was created to address this question.
From the forest to the savannah
For a long time, osteopathy operated within a familiar ‘forest’.
A context in which the focus was primarily on the treatment and management of dysfunction.
Today, this environment is changing.
Progressive integration into healthcare systems and a growing emphasis on prevention are opening up a different space:
broader, more exposed, more complex.
A “savannah”.
In this new context, it is not enough simply to do better what we already know how to do.
We need to expand the tools we use to interpret the human being.
A limitation in the way we interpret vulnerability
Osteopathy now has increasingly sophisticated tools at its disposal for assessing the clinical picture.
However, our understanding of the conditions that give rise to vulnerability often remains incomplete.
Why are some structures more susceptible?
Why do certain patterns tend to recur?
Without answers to these questions, prevention remains incomplete.
A necessary perspective
Evolutionary medicine provides a useful framework for addressing these issues.
Human beings are the result of an evolutionary history characterised by adaptations, compromises and constraints.
From this perspective, many vulnerabilities are not anomalies, but predictable outcomes.
Incorporating this perspective adds depth to clinical reasoning, placing what we observe within a broader systemic framework.
What is EvOstea?
EvOstea is a project designed to bring this perspective into osteopathic practice.
It does not aim to replace existing models, but to expand upon them.
Its aim is to make evolutionary medicine a tool that can be used in clinical osteopathic practice.
-
a framework for reasoning
-
an educational programme
-
a space for cultural development
Cultural dissemination and development
A central component of the project involves the creation and dissemination of content related to evolution that is relevant to osteopathy.
EvOstea aims to collect, organise and make accessible knowledge from the field of evolutionary biology that can contribute to clinical reasoning and prevention.
This process is not intended as general popularisation, but rather as the development of a coherent and relevant cultural framework for the profession.
One direction
EvOstea is not a single course.
It is an attempt to explore what it means to practise osteopathy in a context where prevention takes centre stage, and where a systemic understanding of the human body requires a broader range of tools.
Where to start
The "EvOstea – First Steps" course is the first step towards exploring this approach.
